A Portrait of Marianna Martines

In this concert, the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century pays tribute to the forgotten composer Marianna Martines. Together with soprano Elisabeth Hetherington (winner of the Dutch Music Prize 2024) and directed by Peter Leung, they tell the story of this multi-talented woman from Vienna.

As a young girl, Marianna Martines shared a home with the struggling composer Joseph Haydn and the flamboyant poet and librettist Pietro Metastasio. As a woman, she fascinated royalty and audiences alike with her expressive voice, virtuosic harpsichord playing and fiery compositions. Later, as a teacher, she founded a singing school for girls, shaping the voices of Vienna's finest 18th-century artists.

After her death, her name slowly fell into oblivion.

More than 200 years late, O18c and Elisabeth Hetherington are bringing her back to life on stage. At the center are two of her finest works, "La Tempeste" and "Berenice, ah che fai. Around these, the orchestra folds music by her contemporary Haydn, and a completely new composition by Kate Moore.

Martines' story is not one of oblivion; it is one of resilience, triumph and unwavering character.

The Impossibility of Invisibility

The Impossibility of Invisibilty

Duration75 min

A world where your router knows more about you than your therapist.

Imagine every movement you make, every action you take, even in your own home, being tracked by an invisible sensing grid. Would you behave, or would you revolt?

Welcome to The Impossibility of Invisibility, where music, movement, and theatre prepare you for a future in which privacy is rapidly disappearing. With the recent development of Wi-Fi sensing technology, Wi-Fi signals can now be used to extract nearly every detail about you: from your emotional state to your social life, from your vital functions to your behaviour. How desirable is constant connectedness when it comes at such a cost?

Voice artist and creator Stephanie Pan, dancer and movement artist Paolo Yao, and lighting designer Pavla Beranová transform Wi-Fi sensor data into an immersive world of sound, dance, revelation, and reflection. Slowly, it becomes palpable how Wi-Fi sensing can shape our behaviour—yet also how we might resist it before it’s too late. Drawing you through utopian, dystopian, and realist scenarios, the work puts the myth of technology as progress to the ultimate test.

Schmetterling / Papillon

«Papillon» invites you to contemplate the magical transformation of a young caterpillar into a magnificent butterfly. An event that normally takes place in secret and out of sight suddenly becomes an almost lyrical experience. Guided by music, «Papillon» offers children (and adults!) the soothing enchantment they need to relax, dream, discover and grow up with confidence in an ever-changing world.

Pulse AI and ballet: an experiment between man and machine

More info

Human and artificial intelligence

In Pulse, the Innovation:Lab and &samhoud, together with choreographer Peter Leung, delve into the fusion of human and artificial intelligence. They developed a technological installation in which live performers and the audience co-create with AI.

What will we see?

On 19 June, we will see the presentation of this research. The dancer will be wearing a motion capture suit, a suit that records movements. Physical expressions such as speed and flow are converted into data that AI translates into emotions. This data feeds real-time visual and audio generators, which use light and sound effects to reflect and amplify the performer’s emotional state. In addition, we invite the audience to contribute to the presentation, blurring the boundaries between spectator and participant.

Pulse emphasises that humans are always central to technology. Just as a heartbeat is essential for life, human presence remains crucial in the application of AI. Human emotion and intelligence give meaning to data and create a vibrant and authentic performance.

Ethical questions

After the presentation, there will be a panel discussion reflecting on the role of AI in a creative process. The use of AI also raises ethical questions: is the machine’s interpretation really the same as the artist’s intention? How can we further improve the symbiosis between technology and performance, and do we really want to? The interaction with the audience also gets us thinking: to what extent is the audience ‘allowed’ to influence a performance?

The Circle of Truth

The Circle of Truth Part 2 is the second edition of DOOR Foundation's Truth Trilogy, following the successful Part 1 performed in 2022. Set in a large metal warehouse at the NDSM, DOOR Open Space, 'The Circle of Truth' is inspired by the Faustian way we navigate our lives in this post-truth era.

Once you pass through the small door beneath the vibrant red neon circle, you embark on an immersive journey into the heart of truth.
